I would have thought that one internet connection multiple computers was almost a default in the modern household. Apparently Microsoft disagrees and makes it as difficult as possible to connect one computer to the internet and let other devices connect to it.
Where justice fails to prevail enters a hero (me that is).
The easy way out is to get a wireless router. The router is a device that does one task and does it well. It connects multiple devices into a network and lets them share a network. It presents them as one entity to your ISP and routes the received stuff within its network of devices. This is NOT the method I am going to talk about. Just follow the instructions that came with your router or look it up in the Google-verse.
Not every connection is easy to share with a router. In fact only LAN connections where a physical cable connects to your computer are usually connected by routers. Now if I had a USB dongle or wifi network or a mobile access point routers don't seem to come equipped to handle these. Also some ISPs try to disable anything but single device connectivity. So the entire software and hardware industry conspires against you my dear reader to not let you share a internet connection. Fret now however as a hero enters (me me me!).
1. You will need two computers both with wifi connectivity. Make sure that the switch that enables wifi is on.
2. One of these computers will be the server. Pick any one and connect your USB dongle to it. Connect as you normally would and make sure you are able to connect to the internet. Disconnect again you don't have to remove the dongle just end the connection as you normally do.
3. In the server go to Network and sharing center and choose "Change adapter settings". You will now see a window with all the network connections your computer is capable of. You will likely see something for Bluetooth, Wireless, LAN, etc. You will also see a ZTE Modem or PPPOE or something like that with your ISP's name. You MUST have at least one Wireless Network Connection on here else your wifi isn't installed properly.
4. Right click on the connection for your ISP. Go to Properties then the Sharing tab.
5. In the sharing tab you will see a option to check on "Allow other users to connect using this connection" or something like that. Check this option ON.
6. Now you will be asked to choose "Home Networking Connection" this is a important step and I think a lot of "helpful" sites don't mention it. Which is surprising and stupid. In this choose your Wireless Network connection if there are multiple choose one and let's hope that's the right one. If you currently connected then this option will not be modifiable and you haven't been following my instructions..
7. Click on OK. Reconnect to the internet. Open your favorite
8. Now go back to the infamous Network and sharing center window. This time click on the Manage Wireless Networks option. Then click on the Add button (in the left of the blue bar with the question mark)
9. Now you will be asked to either Manually create a network profile or Create and ad-hoc network. We will of course choose the Ad-hoc network option else why would I title the post such!
10. If it shows you one of those pointless images with crappy text pages that MS probably has patented by now. Hit next. You will (finally!) get to a screen which asks for a Network Name, Security Type, and Security Key. AND don't forget to click on the Save This Network option.
11. Name is just anything that you will remember when it pops up on your other devices it's visible to everyone so don't cuss. The topic of security and keys can fill an entire data center fell free to read more on it. I usually go with WPA2 - Personal and a easy to type key. Of course if you trust your neighbors or feeling generous enough then you can make it an open network.
12. Now Windows should start trying to connect to the new network. If when you click on the little Nework icon in the bottom right of the task bar it shows "Waiting for users" you are almost there. If not try to connect to the ad-hoc network -click on it's name then the connect button.
13. Now in the other wi-fi enabled computer the neworrk you created should show up. Try turning the wifi switch off-on if it doesn't. Click on the network's name and then the connect button and enter the key, if you had chosen one, and you should see the networks connect and then if you see "Internet Access" alongside the new network. Pat yourself on the back (and thank me with a comment or +1). Your connection is shared just like momma taught you.
thanks for visit !
